Dog gets into everything...?
I have an aggressive dog that gets into everything he can reach. He's a shepherd mix and a little over a year old. Mistakenly, for the past year, whenever he has gotten something "illegal" (ie, cell phone, paper towel roll, remote control, clothing, etc.) we've been giving him a treat to draw his attention to and get him to drop it. And we have to throw one across the room so he gets away from the item so we can get it. Is there anything you can suggest we do to get him to stop getting things that he's not supposed to? If we try to physically take it from him he snarls, growls, and bites at us like Cujo. Is he too old for obedience training? He has TONS of toys but those don't lure him away. He's not always like this. There are nights he doesn't get anything. He's at home all day alone while we're at work. You think another dog would help? PLEASE HELP US!!
There was a suggestion to crate your dog during the day, which I, too highly recommend. If this is not feasible, confine your dog to a smaller area. Taking away a little freedom is not a bad thing.
Aggression surrounding "contraband" items is not uncommon, however it can be very dangerous. When the issue is more about your 'stuff' than food and chew toys, your reaction could fuel the problem. Dogs can discover that something is valuable based on how upset you are. This is not at all to say that this is your fault. Usually resource guarding problems stem from early learning and/or genetics.
At this point in time, continuing to throw food is the right thing to do. There are two reasons for this. The primary one is safety. We want to make sure that you and your family stays safe, which means doing whatever you need to do keep yourselves away when you need to redirect your dog's attention. Secondly, although it may seem like a "bribe," you are also showing your dog that there isn't too much to worry about. After all, if your dog is going to take your stuff anyway (which he will until you are able to fully work on the root of the problem), wouldn't you rather he be inclined to bring the item to you in exchange for a treat than have him tear it apart?
