My dog is 4 years old. I am changing from plastic to stainless steel bowls. He is afraid of them.
He will drink out of the water bowl if I hold it but won't go near the food bowl even if I put his favorite treats in it, Any suggestions to make this transition easier will be appreciated
It could be the odd sound made when the bowls move that's scaring him (assuming they're on a hard surface such as concrete or tile). Try putting them on top of a mat or small carpet or something so they can't make scraping noises. Perhaps it's an odd smell about them; try washing them thoroughly so any strange smells will be gone. If he still doesn't warm up, I suggest halving his food between the plastic and steel bowls, and placing them right next to each other. For a day or two he may reject the steel bowl, but don't give up. When he gets hungry he will start checking out the new bowl, and if you are simultaneously putting more food in the new bowl (along with tasty good-smelling treats) and less in the old plastic one, he should convert in no time. Just try to make sure feeding is a fun time and that you don't scold him for being afraid of the new bowls. If after a couple weeks he is still terrified, just go back to plastic.
